826 Valencia – Yoots
826 Valencia

Our Partnership

Yoots' founder, Craig Flax, has a special connection with 826. When the writing skills non-profit began at 826 Valencia in San Francisco, their Pirate Store was legendary among Flax art & design's employees. We are proud to have connected with a nationally recognized organization that now has 8 official chapters in the US and has inspired many other like-minded groups around the world.

Yoots program: Yoots was awarded a generous grant from the Henry Mayo Newhall Foundation to expand 826 Valencia's ability to transport more underrepresented students to one of their three San Francisco writing centers.

Their Mission

Support overburdened teachers and connect caring adults with neighborhood students who needed a little help with their writing To start, yhey landed a spot at 826 Valencia St. and set to work. But because the space was zoned for retail, they needed to open a store. They looked at the ship-like structure of the space, and decided to open a pirate store that would purvey supplies to the working buccaneer — and books by our young authors, of course. Behind the store, a crew of intrepid volunteers built a Writing Lab. Word spread quickly, and soon every chair was filled with students working on their writing with trained tutors. 8000 students have been served to date!

Their Goals

Transform students relationships to writing and Cultivate Wonder
